Februrary Exhibition
At the beginning of this semester, due to medical reasons, I found myself unable to be in the studio and not make the work I wanted to create (such as sculptures and installations), leaving me limited to the type of art I could make, while at the same time allowing myself to recover. This led me to explore digital art and create collages using found photographs (that had been scanned in) and editing them on Adobe Express and Procreate .
After a trip to Berlin in January, I have become really interested in the Dada movement, especially their use of collage and post card sized works. I have also been inspired by up and coming Ukrainian artist, Denys Kulikov, who takes medieval imagery and distorts it to make very interesting and uncomfortable drawings and collages.
The feedback from my formative assessment had been to make my work more ‘complex’ and to ‘produce a disquieting, strange amd troubling site of affect’. Therefore, my work this semester aims to capture that ‘uneasy’feeling, almost as if the viewer had in fact been a victim to a witches ‘curse.’The digital collages featured in this piece link to this idea, by distorting the old images to make them seem slightly awkward and creepy.

As part of this piece,
I included a zine where I deformed the collages
further and included an explanation of my project
ideas for this semester.
My feedback for this piece was overly positive: ‘The collages are strong, compelling, draw the viewer in in a way that is exciting ... the smaller albums (in frames) work well with the piece of domestic furniture.’ This encourages me to explore the relationship between the ordinary (the domestic furniture) and the unordinary (the strange collages) further in future works. I was also advised that the baby head ‘seemed somewhat out of place’ due to the ‘material language’ being different to the other components. This reminds me not to be so obvious and to explore deeper into achieving complexity within my work.
