This semester I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone by working collaboratively. I find it empowering to work with other artists, especially those who hold similar values to myself. For this piece I worked with Liv and Ren, we decided just to express ourselves on paper with no real aim or worry. I found it liberating to work without much care or consideration for an outcome. Once we had finished the painting, we agreed to all individually add our own element or symbol to connect to our personal practice.
Working with these people felt so empowering, which made me consider adding a sigil to represent my self worth and strength, something that I often neglect, as well as acknowledging my practice as a witch. My sigil had personal intent and came from my own energy. It represents the reclaiming of my power, with the intent of ‘I am enough.’ I took visual inspiration from physical things that are important to me, and make me feel protected, and powerful. The swirl shape links to the necklace I wear everyday, the shape reminds me that things in life will keep going, and more often than not, will get better. The shape at the centre of the spiral represents a small viking figure that I keep with me for good luck, to me he represents protection and strength.
Although the piece does not so much link to the core ideas of my practice or creates an ‘eerie’ feeling which I aim to capture in all other areas of my work, I found it important to reconnect with the people around me and allow art to help me heal from any troubles I experience. That’s the ‘magic’ of art.
